✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to sit among his companions, and a stranger would come and not know which of them he was. So we talked to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about setting up something for him by which a stranger would recognize him when he came. So we built for him a bench of clay, and he used to sit on it. I think he said: And we used to sit around him. While we were sitting and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in his seat, a man approached, among the best of people in face, the most pleasant of people in scent, and the cleanest of people in clothing, as if his clothes had not been touched by dirt. He greeted from the edge of the mat and said: "Peace be upon you, O Muhammad." He said: "And upon you be peace." He said: "May I come closer, O Muhammad?" He said: "Come closer." He kept saying: "May I come closer, O Muhammad?" and the Prophet ﷺ kept saying to him, several times, until he placed his hand on the knee of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he said: "O Muhammad, what is Islam?" He said: "To worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, to establish prayer, to give zakah, to perform Hajj to the House, and to fast Ramadan." He said: "If I do this, then I have become a Muslim?" He said: "Yes." He said: "You have spoken the truth." When we heard the man's words to the Messenger of Allah, 'You have spoken the truth,' we found it strange. Then he said: "Tell me, what is faith?" He said: "Faith in Allah, the angels, the Book, and the prophets, and to believe in the divine decree, all of it." He said: "If I do that, then I have believed?" He said: "Yes." He said: "You have spoken the truth." He said: "O Muhammad."
