حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، وَقَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ قَالَ:
جَاءَ عَدِيُّ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ إِلَى عُمَرَ وَهُوَ يُعْطِي النَّاسَ فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَمَا تَعْرِفُنِي ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى بِأَحْسَنِ الْمَعْرِفَةِ أَعْرِفُكَ أَسْلَمْتَ إِذْ كَفَرُوا، وَأَعْطَيْتَ إِذْ مَنَعُوا، وَوَفَيْتَ إِذْ غَدَرُوا، وَأَقْبَلْتَ إِذْ أَدْبَرُوا

✧ Adi b. Hatim came to Umar while he was giving to the people and said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, do you not know me?' He said: 'Indeed, with the best knowledge. I know you: you accepted Islam when they disbelieved, you gave when they withheld, you fulfilled when they betrayed, and you came forward when they turned back.'
