✧ The people dispersed from the Messenger of God ﷺ on the night of the Confederates, and none remained with him except a few. The Messenger of God ﷺ came to me while I was sleeping and said: "Go to the camp of the Confederates and look." I said: "O Messenger of God, by the One who sent you with the truth, I did not get up to come to you except out of shyness from the cold"—or he said: "from the severity of the cold." He said: "Go." So I went until I reached their camp. I found Abu Sufyan lighting a fire, warming his back among a small group around him, and the Confederates had dispersed from him. I came and sat among them. Abu Sufyan sensed that someone not of their own had entered among them, so he said: "Let each man among you take the hand of the one sitting next to him." I struck my hand to the one on my right and took his hand, then I struck my hand to the one on my left and took his hand. I remained a little while, then I got up and went to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was praying. He gestured to me to come close, so I drew near until he extended to me part of the garment he was wearing to warm me. When he finished his prayer, he said: "O Ibn al-Yaman, sit down. What news of the people?" I said: "O Messenger of God, the people have dispersed from Abu Sufyan, and none remain except a small group kindling a fire. God has poured upon them cold like what He poured upon us." The Prophet ﷺ threw his garment over me and I slept. Then he said: "Arise, O sleepy one."
