✧ Hudhayfah and Abu Mas'ud—one of them narrated, and the other confirmed him—said: There was a man among the Children of Israel, and he had abundant wealth. When death approached him, he said to his family: Obey me in what I command you, or else I will give this wealth of mine to others than you. When I die, take me and burn me, then grind me, then wait until there is a day of violent wind and scatter me in the wind. So they did that to him. Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, gathered him, and he had never done any good at all. His Lord said to him: Why did you do this? He said: From fear of You, O my Lord. He said: So the mercy of Allah reached him.

machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of Ribʿī from Abū Masʿūd, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A man met his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, and He said: What did you do? He said: I did no good except that I used to lend to people, so I would give respite to the well-off and overlook the one in difficulty. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: Overlook his faults." And "A man was extravagant (in sin) and said at the time of his death: When I die, burn me..." - the hadith. He said: It is narrated by Abū Mālik al-Ashjaʿī, Nuʿaym b. Abī Hind and ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah and Abū Masʿūd. Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar made an error (wahima) in it: he narrated it from Abū Mālik al-Ashjaʿī, from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah, and said in it: ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir al-Juhanī and Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī said: "This is how we heard it from the Prophet ﷺ." The correct version is: ʿUqbah b. ʿAmr Abū Masʿūd said.
