✧ He arrived with Mu'adh from Yemen and stayed with him in his house and his dwelling. Then the plague struck them, and Mu'adh, Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, Shurahbil b. Hasanah, and Abu Malik were all afflicted on a single day. 'Amr b. al-'As, when he sensed the plague, fled and was terrified with a great terror and said: O people, disperse into these mountain passes, for a matter from Allah has descended upon you; I see it as nothing but punishment and plague. Shurahbil b. Hasanah said to him: You lie; we accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you are more astray than the donkey of your household. 'Amr said: You speak the truth. Mu'adh b. Jabal said to 'Amr b. al-'As: You lie; it is not the plague, nor punishment, but it is the mercy of your Lord, the call of your Prophet, and the taking of the righteous. O Allah, give the family of Mu'adh the fullest share of this mercy. He said: By evening, his son 'Abd al-Rahman was afflicted—the most beloved of creation to him, after whom he had his kunya. Mu'adh returned from the mosque and found him distressed, and said: O 'Abd al-Rahman, how are you? He replied: O my father, the truth from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters. Mu'adh said: And we, if Allah wills, you will find me among the patient. He died that night, and he buried him the next day. Mu'adh b. Jabal sent al-Harith b. 'Umayrah to Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah to ask how he was. Abu 'Ubaydah showed him his affliction in his hand, and al-Harith b. 'Umayrah wept and was frightened when he saw it. Abu 'Ubaydah swore by Allah that he would not love to have in its place red camels. He said: Al-Harith returned to Mu'adh and found him unconscious, so al-Harith wept and sought to make others weep. Then Mu'adh regained consciousness and said: O son of the Humayri woman, why do you weep over me? I seek refuge in Allah from you. Al-Harith said: By Allah, I do not weep over you. Mu'adh said: Then over what do you weep? He said: I weep over what I have missed from you—the two times of day, morning and evening. Mu'adh said: Sit me up. He sat him up in his lap and said: Listen to me, for I enjoin upon you a bequest. As for what you weep over—your coming in the morning and evening—knowledge is in its place between the two covers of the mushaf. If its interpretation is difficult for you, then seek it after me from three: 'Uwaymir Abu al-Darda', or Salman al-Farisi, or Ibn Umm 'Abd. And I warn you against the slip of the scholar and the argument of the hypocrite. Then death's agony intensified for Mu'adh; he struggled as no one had struggled. Whenever he recovered from a swoon, he opened his eyes and said: Choke me with Your choking, for by Your might, You know that I love You. He said: When he passed away, al-Harith set out until he came to Abu al-Darda' in Hims and stayed with him as long as Allah willed. Then al-Harith said: My brother Mu'adh enjoined me to you, Salman al-Farisi, and Ibn Umm 'Abd. I see myself as nothing but departing to Iraq. He came to Kufa and attended the gathering of Ibn Umm 'Abd morning and evening. While he was thus in the gathering one day, Ibn Umm 'Abd said: Who are you? I said: A man from the people of Syria. Ibn Umm 'Abd said: What an excellent tribe are the people of Syria, were it not for one thing. Al-Harith said: What is that one thing? He said: Were it not that they testify against themselves that they are among the people of Paradise. He said: Al-Harith said 'Indeed we belong to Allah' twice or three times and said: Mu'adh spoke the truth in what he told me. Ibn Umm 'Abd said: And what did he say, O son of my brother? He said: He warned me against the slip of the scholar. By Allah, O Ibn Mas'ud, you are but one of two men: either a man who has entered upon certainty and testifies that there is no god but Allah, so you are among the people of Paradise, or a man in doubt who does not know where your station is. Ibn Mas'ud said: My brother spoke the truth; it is a slip, so do not hold me to account for it. Ibn Mas'ud took al-Harith by the hand and went with him to his dwelling, and he stayed with him as long as Allah willed. Then al-Harith said: I must visit Abu 'Abd Allah Salman al-Farisi in al-Mada'in. Al-Harith set out until he came to Salman in al-Mada'in. When he greeted him, Salman said: Stay where you are until I come out to you. Al-Harith said: By Allah, I do not think you know me, O Abu 'Abd Allah. He said: Yes, my soul knew your soul before I knew you. Indeed souls are troops mustered by Allah; those that knew one another came together, and those that did not know one another separated over other than Allah. He stayed with him as long as Allah willed. Then he returned to Syria. Those are the ones who knew one another for the sake of Allah and visited one another for the sake of Allah.
