✧ When Hafsah became widowed from Khunays b. Hudhafah al-Sahmi, one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ who had witnessed Badr and died in Madinah, Umar said: "I met Uthman b. Affan and offered Hafsah to him, saying: 'If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bint Umar.' He said: 'I will consider my situation.' I waited some nights, then he met me and said: 'I do not want to marry at this time.' Then I met Abu Bakr and said: 'If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bint Umar.' Abu Bakr remained silent and did not give me any reply. I was more upset with him than with Uthman. I waited some nights, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her, and I married her to him. Abu Bakr ؓ met me and said: 'Perhaps you were upset with me when you offered Hafsah to me and I did not reply?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Nothing prevented me from replying to your offer except that I already knew the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had mentioned Hafsah, and I would not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Had he left her, I would have accepted her or married her.'"
