✧ The people of the Suffah were poor people, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Whoever has food for two should go with three, and whoever has food for four should go with five,” or as he said. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ؓ came with three, and the Prophet of God ﷺ went with ten, and Abu Bakr with three. He said: He is myself, my father, and my mother. He said: I do not know if he said: and the servant of our house and the house of Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr had dinner with the Messenger of God ﷺ, then stayed until he prayed the night prayer with the Messenger of God ﷺ, then returned after as much of the night had passed as God willed. His wife said: What kept you from your guests? Or she said: your guest? He said: Have you not fed them dinner? She said: They refused until you come. They had been offered to them. He said: I went and hid myself. He said: O Ghunthar! He said: He became upset and cursed, and said: Eat! By God, I will never eat it. They said: By God, we will not eat until you eat. He said: He took some, and by God, we would not take a morsel without it growing from beneath it. He said: We ate our fill, and it became more than it was before. Abu Bakr ؓ looked at it, and it was as it was or more. He said to his mother: O sister of Banu Firas, what is this? She said: No, by the delight of my eye, it is three times more than it was before. Abu Bakr ؓ ate from it and said: That was from Satan, meaning his oath. Then he ate a morsel from it, then carried it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and it remained with him until morning. He said: There was a pact between us and a people, and the term ended, so they divided us into twelve men, with each man of them—God knows best how many followed each man—except that he was counted, and they all ate.
