✧ We set out with ʿUmar until, when we were at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, he entered iḥrām and we entered iḥrām. A rider passed by us from whom the scent of perfume emanated. ʿUmar said, “Who is this?” They said, “Muʿāwiyah.” He said, “What is this, O Muʿāwiyah?” He said, “I passed by Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān and she did this to me.” He said, “Go back and wash it off, for I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘The pilgrim is the one with disheveled hair and unperfumed.'”
