✧ Our beloved and our Prophet—may my father and my soul be his ransom—was announced to us six days before his death. When the parting drew near, he gathered us in the house of our mother ʿĀʾishah and looked at us, and his eyes shed tears. Then he said: Welcome to you, and may Allah give you life, protect you, shelter you, support you, raise you, guide you, provide for you, grant you success, keep you safe, and accept you. I enjoin you to fear Allah, and I entrust you to Allah and appoint Him as successor over you. I am to you a clear warner: do not exalt yourselves above Allah in His servants and His lands, for Allah said to me and to you: "That is the home of the Hereafter; We assign it to those who do not desire exaltation in the earth or corruption. And the outcome is for the righteous." Then he said: Is there not in Hell a dwelling for the arrogant? Then he said: The appointed time and the return to Allah have drawn near—and to the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, and to the Garden of Refuge, and the fullest cup, and the highest companion—I think he said. We said: O Prophet of Allah, who then will wash you? He said: The men of my household, the closest then the next closest. We said: In what shall we shroud you? He said: In these garments of mine if you wish, or in a Yemeni suit, or in Egyptian white cloth. He said: We said: Who among us will pray over you? We wept, and he wept. He said: Gently—may Allah forgive you and reward you well on behalf of your Prophet. When you have washed me and placed me on my bier in this house of mine at the edge of my grave, leave me for a while. The first to pray over me will be my intimate friend and companion Jibrīl ﷺ, then Mīkāʾīl ﷺ, then Isrāfīl ﷺ, then the Angel of Death ﷺ with his troops, then the angels—may Allah bless them all. Then enter upon me group after group and pray over me and greet me with peace. Do not harm me with a weeping woman—I think he said—nor a wailing woman, nor a lamenting woman. Let the men of my household begin the prayer over me, then you after them. Convey peace from me to yourselves, and to whoever is absent from my brothers, convey peace from me to him. Whoever enters with you into your religion after me, I call upon you as witnesses that I convey peace—I think he said—upon myself and upon everyone who follows me in my religion from my day until the Day of Resurrection. We said: O Messenger of Allah, who among us will place you in your grave? He said: The men of my household along with many angels who see you from where you do not see them.
