✧ Suspect opinion in matters of religion, for I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal rejecting the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by my own opinion, while I did not fail to seek the truth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was writing between himself and the people of Makkah, and he said: "Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." They said: "If we thought that, we would believe you in what you say; but write as we write: In Your name, O Allah." He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted, but I refused, until he said to me: "O 'Umar, do you see that I have accepted, yet you refuse?" He said: Then I accepted.
