✧ Indeed, the creation of one of you is gathered in his mother's belly for forty days, then he becomes a clinging clot (ʿalaqah) for the like of that, then he becomes a lump of flesh (muḍghah) for the like of that. Then Allah sends to him the angel, and he is commanded with four words, and it is said: write down his term, his deeds, his provision, and whether he is wretched or blessed. Then indeed one of you performs the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is between him and it only a cubit, then the decree overtakes him, so he performs the deeds of the people of the Fire and enters it. And indeed a man performs the deeds of the people of the Fire until there is between him and it only a cubit, then the decree overtakes him, so he performs the deeds of the people of Paradise — I think he said — and enters it.
