حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ:
كُنْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي غَارٍ وَقَدْ أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَالْمُرْسَلاتِ عُرْفًا فَنَحْنُ نَأْخُذُهَا مِنْ فِيهِ رَطْبَةً إِذْ خَرَجَتْ عَلَيْنَا حَيَّةٌ، فَقَالَ: اقْتُلُوهَا، فَابْتَدَرْنَاهَا لِنَقْتُلَهَا فَسَبَقَتْنَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: وَقَاهَا اللهُ شَرَّكُمْ كَمَا وَقَاكُمْ شَرَّهَا

✧ I was with the Prophet ﷺ in a cave when Surat al-Mursalat was revealed to him. We were taking it from his mouth, fresh, when a snake came out upon us. He said: "Kill it." We rushed to kill it, but it escaped us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah protected it from your evil just as He protected you from its evil."

Al-Masʿūdī narrated it from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbdullāh, and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAbd al-Wārith followed him, from Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbdullāh. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. al-Nuʿmān contradicted him and narrated it from Ḥafṣ, from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh. The correct version from Ḥafṣ is what Abū Bakr b. Abī Shaybah, Abū Kurayb, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Ibn Numayr narrated from him, from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from ʿAbdullāh. Likewise said Shaybān, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr, al-Thawrī, his brother ʿAmr, Yaḥyā b. Abī Zāʾidah and Ḥammād b. Shuʿayb. Manṣūr narrated it from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh, and it was said: from ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad. Abū ʿAwānah narrated it from Mughīrah, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh; Isḥāq b. Sayyār said that from Yaḥyā b. Ḥammād. Ḥasan al-Ḥulwānī said, from Yaḥyā b. Ḥammād, from Abū ʿAwānah, from Mughīrah, from Ibrāhīm, from Shaqīq, from ʿAbdullāh. Jarīr said, from Mughīrah, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbdullāh, as a mursal report. The correct one is the hadith of ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Abī al-Rijāl narrated to us, Abū Umayyah Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm narrated to us, ʿUbaydullāh b. Mūsā narrated to us, Sufyān al-Thawrī narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh, who said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷷ in a cave, and {By those sent forth in succession} was revealed to him, and we began receiving it from him. Then a snake came out from the side of the cave, and he said: 'Kill it!' We rushed at it but it got ahead of us. He said: 'It was protected from your evil just as you were protected from its evil.'" Abū Umayyah was alone in narrating it from ʿUbaydullāh, from Sufyān. Others said: from ʿUbaydullāh, from Shaybān. Ibn Karāmah said: from ʿUbaydullāh, from Isrāʾīl, from Manṣūr. Allah knows best. I said: Mūsā b. al-ʿAbbās al-Āzādhwārī narrated it from Aḥmad b. al-Azhar, from ʿUbaydullāh b. Mūsā, from Sufyān, and from Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUtbah, from ʿUbaydullāh, from Shaybān, both from Manṣūr, with it. He said: Perhaps Aḥmad b. al-Azhar agreed with Abū Umayyah, but this did not reach us.
