✧ Ja'far b. Abi Talib said: 'O Messenger of God, permit me to go to a land where I worship God and fear no one until I die.' He said: 'So he permitted him, and he went to the Negus.' Mu'adh said: 'Ibn 'Awn narrated to me.' He said: 'Umayr b. Ishaq narrated to me.' He said: 'Amr b. al-As narrated to me.' He said: 'When I saw Ja'far and his companions safe in the land of Abyssinia, I said: I will certainly bring down this man and his companions. So I came to the Negus and said: Give permission for Amr b. al-As. He gave me permission, and I entered and said: In our land there is a paternal cousin of this man who claims that people have no god but one. By God, if you do not relieve us of him and his companions, I will never cross this sea to you again, nor will any of my companions. He said: Where is he? I said: He will come with your messenger, for he does not come with me. So he sent a messenger with me, and we found him sitting among his companions. He called him, and he came. When we reached the door, I called: Give permission for Amr b. al-As. And behind me he called: Give permission for the party of God, Mighty and Majestic. The Negus heard his voice, so he gave him permission, and he entered, and I entered. The Negus was on a throne, and Ja'far was sitting before him with his companions around him on cushions. Umayr described the throne. Amr said: When I saw his seat, I came and sat between him and the throne, and I put him behind my back. And I seated one of my companions between every two of his companions. He said: He was silent and we were silent, and he was silent and we were silent, until I said to myself: May this Abyssinian slave be cursed; will he not speak? Then he spoke and said: "Speak." Amr said: That means, "speak." I said: The paternal cousin of this man claims that people have no god but one, and by God, if you do not kill him, I will never cross this sea to you again, nor will any of my companions. He said: O companions of Amr, what do you say? They said: We are with what Amr said. He said: O party of God, speak. He said: Then Ja'far bore witness. Amr said: By God, that was the first day I ever heard the testimony of faith. He said: I bear witness that there is no god but God, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. He said: And you, what do you say? I said: I follow his religion. He said: Then he raised his hand and placed it on his forehead, as Ibn 'Awn described, then said: A law like the law of Moses? What does he say about Jesus? Ja'far said: He says: The spirit of God and His word. He said: Then he took something from the ground and did not miss, like this, and said: Were it not for my kingdom, I would follow you. Go, O Amr, for by God, I do not care if you never come to me again, nor anyone of your companions. And go, O party of God, for you are safe. Whoever fights you, I will kill him, and whoever robs you, I will compensate him. And he said to his doorkeeper: Look at this man; do not veil him from me unless I am with my family. If I am with my family, inform him. If he insists that you give him permission, then give him permission. He said: Then one evening I met him in the street, and I looked behind him and saw no one behind him. I took his hand and said: Do you know that I bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God? He said: He squeezed my hand and said: You are upon this. And we parted. No sooner had I come to my companions than it was as if they had witnessed me and him, and they did not ask me about anything until they seized me and threw me down. They put a cloak over my face and began to squeeze me. I would sometimes get my head out until I slipped away naked, without a shred on me, and they left nothing of mine but took it. I took a woman's head covering from her head and put it over my private parts. She said to me: Like this? And I said: Like this, as if she was amazed at me. He said: And I came to Ja'far and entered his house. When he saw me, he said: What is the matter with you? I said: It is only that I came to my companions, and it was as if they had witnessed me and you, and they did not ask me about anything until they threw a cloak over my face and covered me with it, and they took everything of the world that belonged to me. You see nothing on me except the head covering of an Abyssinian woman that I took from her head. He said: Come with me. When we reached the door of the Negus, he called: Give permission for the party of God. His doorkeeper came and said: He is with his family. He said: Ask permission for me to enter upon him. So he asked permission for him, and he gave him permission. When he entered, he said: Amr has left his religion and followed my religion. The Negus said: No. He said: Yes. So he called his doorkeeper and said: Go to Amr and tell him that this man claims that you have left your religion and followed his religion. I said: Yes. My companions came to me until we stood at the door of the house, and I wrote down everything, even the towel. I did not leave anything that had gone but I took it. If I had wished to take from their wealth, I would have done so. He said: Then afterwards I was among those who came in the ships as Muslims. And we do not know that this hadith is narrated from Ja'far, from the Prophet ﷺ, with this wording except from this route with this chain.
