A concession was granted to the old man and the old woman in that matter, while they were able to fast, to break the fast if they wished and to feed a poor person in place of each day. Then that was abrogated by this verse: "So whoever of you witnesses the month, let him fast it." And the ruling remained in force for the old man and the old woman when they are unable to fast, and for the pregnant woman and the nursing mother when they fear: they break the fast and feed a poor person in place of each day.
