A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, tearing out his hair and striking his chest, and saying: "The distant one has perished!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What is that?" He said: "I had relations with my wife in Ramadan while I was fasting." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Are you able to free a slave?" He said: "No." He said: "Are you able to offer a camel as a sacrifice?" He said: "No." He said: "Then sit down." Then a basket of dates was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "Take this and give it in charity." He said: "I do not find anyone more needy than myself." He said: "Then eat it, and fast one day in place of what you committed."

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationDāwūd b. Abī Hind narrated it from ʿAṭāʾ with the addition of mentioning fasting two consecutive months, except that he did not mention making up the day, nor the amount of the basket (ʿaraq). It was also narrated through other routes from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, and there is disagreement about him regarding the wording of the hadith. Reliance is placed on the connected (mawṣūl) narrations, and success is from Allah.
