The letter of ʿUmar reached us at Khānaqīn, saying that the crescents are some of them larger than others, so if you see the crescent at the beginning of the day, do not break the fast until two witnesses testify that they saw it the evening before.

machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAlī said: I asked Abū Nuʿaym, "Did Ibn Abī Laylā hear from ʿUmar?" He said, "I do not know." Muḥammad b. ʿAlī said: I asked Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, "Did Ibn Abī Laylā hear from ʿUmar?" He did not confirm that. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, who is Ibn ʿĀmir al-Thaʿlabī, others are more reliable (athbat) than him, and the ḥadīth of Abū Wāʾil from ʿUmar is sounder (aṣaḥḥ) in its chain than his. It was narrated by al-Aʿmash and Manṣūr from Abū Wāʾil.
