machine translationIbn al-Jawzī said: This ḥadīth of Ḥudhayfah was graded weak (ḍaʿīf) by Aḥmad. It is then taken to refer to a clear sky, since it makes no mention of clouds, or to the case where the crescent of Ramaḍān and the crescent of Shawwāl were both obscured, as mentioned before. In al-Tanqīḥ it is said: This is a mistake on his part, for Aḥmad only meant that the sound (ṣaḥīḥ) view is that of those who said "from a man among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ", and that naming Ḥudhayfah is an error from Jarīr. Ibn al-Jawzī thought this was Aḥmad declaring the ḥadīth weak and that it is disconnected (mursal). But it is not mursal; rather it is connected (muttaṣil), either from Ḥudhayfah or from a man among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and the anonymity of a Companion does not harm the soundness of a ḥadīth. He said: In sum, the ḥadīth is sound (ṣaḥīḥ), and its narrators are trustworthy (thiqāt), relied upon in the Ṣaḥīḥ.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIt is said that the correct version is from Ribʿī from an unnamed man among the Companions, and that does not harm its soundness.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationThe mention of Ḥudhayfah in it is not preserved (maḥfūẓ).
