A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with disheveled hair and said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me what prayer Allah has made obligatory upon me." He said: "The five prayers, unless you volunteer something extra." He said: "Tell me what fasting Allah has made obligatory upon me." He said: "Fasting the month of Ramadan, unless you volunteer something extra." He said: "Tell me what zakāh Allah has made obligatory upon me." He said: So he, meaning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, informed him of the laws of Islam. Then he said: "By the One who has honored you, I will not volunteer anything extra, nor will I reduce anything of what Allah has made obligatory upon me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "He has succeeded, by his father, if he is truthful," or: "He will enter Paradise, by Allah, if he is truthful."

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

وأبيه لفظة منكرة تردها الآثار الصحاح وبالله التوفيق

machine translationThe phrase "by his father" is a rejected (munkar) expression, refuted by the authentic reports. And success is by Allah.

in سنن البيهقي الكبرى, p. 7999
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThe phrase "He has succeeded, by his father, if he is truthful" is not preserved (ghayr maḥfūẓ). It came from its narrator, Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar, in the wording "He has succeeded, by Allah, if he is truthful." He said: This is preferable to the narration of the one who narrated it from him with the wording "by his father," because that is a rejected (munkar) expression, refuted by the authentic reports, and it does not occur at all in the narration of Mālik. Some claimed that one of the narrators from him misread his words "by his father" from "by Allah," and that is possible, but such a thing is not established merely by possibility.

in سنن البيهقي الكبرى, p. 7999
  • أبو الوليد الباجي

رواية مالك أصح من رواية إسماعيل بن جعفر لأنه أحفظ وقد تابعه الرواة ولعل إسماعيل نقله بالمعنى

machine translationThe narration of Mālik is more sound (aṣaḥḥ) than the narration of Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar, because he is a better memorizer (aḥfaẓ) and the narrators corroborated him; and perhaps Ismāʿīl transmitted it by meaning.
