That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him as a collector of alms, and his father said: "Do not set out until you renew your covenant with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So when he wanted to set out, he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "O Qays, do not come on the Day of Resurrection with a camel on your neck that groans, or a cow that lows, or a sheep that bleats, and do not be like Abū Righāl." Saʿd said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who is Abū Righāl?" He said: "A collector of alms whom Ṣāliḥ sent. He found a man in al-Ṭāʾif with a small flock of nearly a hundred sheep that were without milk (shiṣāṣ), except for one sheep, and a small son with no mother, whose livelihood was the milk of that sheep. The owner of the sheep said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am the messenger of the messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So he welcomed him and said: 'These are my sheep, so take whichever you like.' He looked at the milking sheep and said: 'This one.' The man said: 'This boy, as you see, has no food or drink other than it.' He said: 'If you love milk, I love it too.' The man said: 'Take two sheep in its place.' He kept adding and offering until he offered him five sheep without milk in its place, but he refused. When the man saw that, he went to his bow and shot him, and killed him. He said: 'It is not right for anyone to bring this news to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before me.' Then the owner of the sheep came to Ṣāliḥ, the Prophet ﷺ, and told him. Ṣāliḥ said: 'O Allah, curse Abū Righāl; O Allah, curse Abū Righāl.'" Then Saʿd b. ʿUbādah said: "O Messenger of Allah, relieve Qays of collecting alms."
