A man came to him and said: "Shall I begin with al-Ṣafā before al-Marwah, or with al-Marwah before al-Ṣafā? And shall I pray before I perform ṭawāf, or perform ṭawāf before I pray? And shall I shave before I slaughter, or slaughter before I shave?" Ibn ʿAbbās said: "Take that from the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for it is more fitting to be remembered. Allah the Exalted said: إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللهِ, so al-Ṣafā is before al-Marwah. And He the Exalted said: وَلا تَحْلِقُوا رُءُوسَكُمْ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْهَدْيُ مَحِلَّهُ, so slaughtering is before shaving. And He the Exalted said: وَطَهِّرْ بَيْتِيَ لِلطَّائِفِينَ وَالْقَائِمِينَ وَالرُّكَّعِ السُّجُودِ, so ṭawāf is before prayer."
