An imām of ours who was called Abū Rimthah led us in prayer, and he said: "I prayed this prayer, or the like of this prayer, with the Prophet ﷺ." He said: Abū Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ used to stand in the front row on his right, and there was a man who had witnessed the first takbīr of the prayer. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ prayed, then gave the salām to his right and to his left until we saw the whiteness of his cheeks. Then he turned away, like the turning of Abū Rimthah - meaning himself. Then the man who had caught the first takbīr of the prayer with him stood up to pray an additional prayer, so ʿUmar sprang to him, took hold of his shoulders and shook him, then said: "Sit down, for the People of the Book were destroyed only because there was no separation between their prayers." So the Prophet ﷺ raised his eyes and said: "Allah has set you right, O son of al-Khaṭṭāb."
