I saw ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān perform ablution. He washed his hands three times, washed his face three times and his forearms three times, wiped his head three times, and washed his feet three times. Then he said: "Thus I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution." Then he said: "Whoever performs ablution less than this ablution of mine, it will suffice him."

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translationThe chain of transmission of this hadith is good (ḥasan); all of its men are in the two Ṣaḥīḥs except Ibn Wardān, whom Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn and Abū Ḥātim declared trustworthy. He said: the hadith is good (ḥasan) with this addition.

machine translationIn the chain of this hadith is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Wardān. Yaḥyā said: "He is fair (ṣāliḥ)," and Abū Ḥātim said: "There is nothing wrong with him." The other men of this chain are well known. Were it not that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān contradicted the trustworthy narrators by being alone in mentioning three washings, it would be sound (ṣaḥīḥ) or good (ḥasan).
