Ḥafṣah ordered a copy of the Qur'an (muṣḥaf) to be written for her, and she said to the one who was writing: "When you come to the mention of the prayer, leave its place blank until I teach you what I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite." So he did so, and he wrote: ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ﴾

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThe hadith is well known through the narration of ʿAmr b. Rāfiʿ from Ḥafṣah; al-Qaʿqāʿ b. Ḥakīm and Zayd b. Aslam narrated it from him.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThe narration of those who affirmed the letter wāw in the hadith of Ḥafṣah is sounder in its chain of transmission, and Allah knows best. And the statement of Nāfiʿ suffices you: "I saw the wāw in it."

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis is a connected-to-the-source (musnad) report, except that it contains a break (irsāl) on the part of Nāfiʿ. Then he strengthened it with what he reported of his own seeing. The hadith of Zayd b. Aslam from ʿAmr the scribe is connected (mawṣūl); even though it is stopped at a Companion (mawqūf), it is a supporting witness (shāhid) for the soundness of the narration of ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar from Nāfiʿ.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThere is disagreement about the hadith of Ḥafṣah, over whether it is traced back to the Prophet (raf') and over whether the wāw is established in it.

machine translationThere is disagreement over whether it is traced back to the Prophet (raf'), and over its text as well.
