I entered upon ʿĀʾishah (may God be pleased with her) and said: "O Mother of the Believers, I was a slave of ʿUtbah b. Abī Lahab. ʿUtbah died and his sons inherited me, and they sold me to ʿAbdullāh b. Abī ʿAmr al-Makhzūmī. Ibn Abī ʿAmr freed me, but they stipulated my walāʾ (right of patronage). So whose freedman am I?" In the narration of Abū Nuʿaym: He said: I entered upon ʿĀʾishah. He had belonged to ʿUtbah b. Abī Lahab, then ʿUtbah died and his sons inherited him, and Ibn Abī ʿAmr bought him and freed him, and the sons of ʿUtbah stipulated the walāʾ. So he entered upon ʿĀʾishah (may God be pleased with her) and mentioned that to her. ʿĀʾishah (may God be pleased with her) said: I entered upon Barīrah, who was a mukātabah (a slave contracted to buy her freedom), and she said: "Buy me, O Mother of the Believers, for my owners will sell me, and free me." In the narration of Abū Nuʿaym: "Buy me and free me." I said: Yes. She said: "My owners will not sell me until they stipulate my walāʾ." I said: "I have no need of you." The Messenger of God ﷺ heard that, or it reached him, and he said: "What is the matter with Barīrah?" So I told him. In the narration of Abū Nuʿaym: He mentioned that to ʿĀʾishah, and ʿĀʾishah mentioned what she had said to her. He said: "Buy her and free her, and let them stipulate whatever they wish." In the narration of Abū Nuʿaym: "Leave them, and let them stipulate whatever they wish." ʿĀʾishah said: So I freed her, and her owners stipulated the walāʾ. In the narration of Abū Nuʿaym: ʿĀʾishah bought her and freed her, and her owners stipulated the walāʾ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "The walāʾ belongs to the one who frees, even if they stipulate a hundred conditions." Khallād added in his narration: "So you are the freedman of Ibn Abī ʿAmr."
