ʿUmar wrote to Abū Mūsā (may God be pleased with them both): People will render to the Imam what the Imam renders to God. And if the Imam grazes freely, the subjects will graze freely. A time is near when people will feel an aversion toward their ruler. I seek refuge in God that grudges that are carried, desires that are followed, and a world that is preferred should overtake me and you. So uphold the truth, even if only for an hour of the day.
