I witnessed ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) give the full brothers (brothers of the same father and mother) a share with the maternal brothers in the third. A man said to him: "Last year you ruled otherwise." He said: "How did I rule?" He said: "You gave it to the full brothers and gave the maternal brothers nothing." He said: "That was according to what we ruled then, and this is according to what we rule now."
