ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (may God be pleased with him) used to sacrifice one ram on behalf of the Messenger of God ﷺ (and one ram for himself. We said: O Commander of the Believers, you sacrifice on behalf of the Messenger of God ﷺ?) He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ commanded me to sacrifice on his behalf always, so I sacrifice on his behalf always.

machine translationAbū al-Ḥasnāʾ, the narrator from al-Ḥakam, is named al-Ḥasan, and nothing is known of his condition.

  • Mubarakpūri

machine translationI have not found any sound raised (marfūʿ) hadith on sacrificing on behalf of the dead alone. As for the hadith of ʿAlī mentioned in this chapter, it is weak (ḍaʿīf).

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationSharīk b. ʿAbdullāh was alone in narrating it with its chain. Even if it were established, it would indicate that it is permissible to sacrifice on behalf of those Muslims who have departed from this world.
