A cow passed by us, unruly and bolting; it did not pass by anyone without goring him and charging at him. So we went out after it, driving it on, (until we reached al-Ṣammāʾ. With us was a Coptic boy of Banū Ḥarām, and he had a cloak wrapped around him. The cow charged at him to gore him, and he struck it below the throat and above the place where the shoulder blade turns back, and it fell on its own wound, and its slaughter could not be performed in time.) Jābir said: I informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (of its matter), and he said: "When a domestic animal becomes wild and unruly, then what makes a wild animal lawful makes it lawful. Go back to your cow and eat it." So we went back to it and butchered it.
