The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me two young boys, brothers, and I sold one of them. The Prophet ﷺ said: "What did the two boys do?" I said: "I sold one of them." He said: "Take him back."

machine translationWe do not know of anyone who narrated this hadith from al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, except Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh, and Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah did not hear anything from al-Ḥakam. Someone other than al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad also narrated this hadith from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, from Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah, from a man, from al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā. And Abū Khālid al-Dālānī and al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh narrated it from al-Ḥakam, from Maymūn b. Abī Shabīb, from ʿAlī.

machine translationMaymūn did not meet ʿAlī.

machine translationIt is disconnected (mursal), since Maymūn did not meet ʿAlī.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translation[The report] of al-Ḥakam from Ibn Abī Laylā from ʿAlī is in fact [the report of] al-Ḥakam from Maymūn from ʿAlī, raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ). So Abū Ḥātim pointed to the error in this narration.
