ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) was brought a man for a prescribed punishment (ḥadd). A whip was brought that was hard, and he said: "I want one softer than this." Then a whip was brought that was soft, and he said: "I want one harder than this." Then a whip was brought between the two whips, and he said: "Strike, and do not let your armpit be seen, and give every limb its due."
