ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) went out and prayed over a funeral, and al-Sāʾib heard him say: "I smelled the odor of a drink on ʿUbaydullāh and his companions, and I am going to ask about what they drank; if it was intoxicating, I will apply the prescribed punishment to them." Sufyān said: Maʿmar informed me, from al-Zuhrī, from al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd, that he was present when he applied the prescribed punishment to them.
