That he was sitting working in the marketplace when a woman passed carrying a baby boy. The people were stirred up, and I was stirred up among those who were stirred up, and I reached the Prophet ﷺ. I think he said: So he said: "Who is the father of this one with you?" He said: She remained silent. He said: Then a young man beside her said: I am his father, O Messenger of Allah. He said: So he turned to her and said: "Who is the father of this one with you?" He said: She remained silent. He said: The young man said: O Messenger of Allah, she is young in age, newly out of a disgrace, and she is not going to speak to you, so I am his father, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Then he looked at some of those around him as though asking them about him. They said: We know nothing of him except good, or words to that effect. Then he said: "Are you married (muḥṣan)?" He said: Yes. So he commanded that he be stoned, and he was stoned. He said: So we went out with him and dug a pit for him until we had made it fit, then we threw stones at him until he was still, then we returned to our gatherings. He said: While we were like that, an old man came asking about the one who was stoned. We stood up to him, seized him by the collar, and took him to the Prophet ﷺ and said: This man has come asking about the wicked one. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Enough! He is better in the sight of Allah than the scent of musk." He said: So we went back with the old man, and it was his father. We came to him and helped him with washing him, shrouding him and burying him. He said: And I do not know whether he said: and praying over him, or not.
