I was sitting with him in the shade of the Kaʿbah while he was speaking to the people, saying: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we stopped at a stopping place. Some of us were pitching his tent, some of us were with his grazing animals, and some of us were practising archery, when the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out: "The prayer is being gathered!" He said: So I went to him while he was addressing the people, saying: "O people, there was no prophet before me but that it was his duty to guide his community to what he knew to be good for them, and to warn them against what he knew to be evil for them. Beware, the well-being of this community is in its beginning, and its last part will be afflicted by trials and tribulations, some of which will push against others. Tribulations will come and the believer will say: 'This is my destruction,' then it will clear away; then another will come and he will say: 'This one, this one,' then another will come and he will say: 'This one, this one,' then it will clear away. So whoever loves to be removed from the Fire and to enter Paradise, let his death come to him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people as he would like to be treated. And whoever gives his pledge to an imam, giving him the clasp of his hand and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him if he is able." And once he said: "as much as he is able." I think he said: "If another comes to contest with him, then strike the neck of the other." When I heard that, I put my head between two men and said: Your cousin Muʿāwiyah commands us to kill ourselves and to consume our wealth among ourselves unjustly, while Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: "{وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ}" and "{وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ}". He said: He placed his fist on his forehead, then bowed his head, then raised his head and said: Obey him in obedience to Allah, and disobey him in disobedience to Allah. I said: Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: Yes, my two ears heard it and my heart retained it.
