"There are three whom Allah will not look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment: a man who had surplus water on the road and withheld it from the wayfarer; a man who pledged allegiance to an imam, pledging allegiance to him only for the sake of worldly gain, so that if he gave him some of it he was pleased, and if he did not give him some of it he was angry; and a man who displayed merchandise after the ʿAṣr prayer and said: 'By Allah, other than Whom there is no god, I was offered such and such for it,' and a man believed him and bought it from him." Then he recited this verse: {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} to the end of the verse.

machine translationAl-Aʿmash narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ziyād, Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, ʿAlī b. Mushir, Jarīr b. Ḥāzim, al-Thawrī and Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh narrated it from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah. Ṣāliḥ b. Abī al-Aswad differed from them and narrated it from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ẓabyān, from Abū Hurayrah. The correct (ṣaḥīḥ) version is the hadith of Abū Ṣāliḥ from Abū Hurayrah, and likewise ʿAmr b. Dīnār and Abū Hishām al-Rummānī narrated it from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah.
