Abū Lu'lu'ah was a slave of al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah – then he mentioned his story. He said: He made a dagger with two heads, sharpened it and poisoned it. He said: ʿUmar ؓ pronounced the takbīr – and he would not pronounce the takbīr when the prayer was called until he had spoken and said: "Straighten your rows." So he (Abū Lu'lu'ah) came and stood in the row directly opposite him, next to ʿUmar ؓ, in the dawn prayer. When he pronounced the takbīr, he stabbed him on his shoulder, and in another place, and in his flank, and ʿUmar ؓ fell. He stabbed thirteen men with him; seven of them recovered and six died. ʿUmar ؓ was carried and taken away – and he mentioned the hadith. He said: He called for a drink so as to see how deep his wound was. Nabīdh was brought to him and he drank it, and it came out of him, and he could not tell whether it was blood or nabīdh. So he called for milk, and it was brought to him and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They said: "There is no harm upon you, O Commander of the Believers." He said: "If being killed is harm, then I have been killed."
