I heard Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAbdullāh b. Jaʿfar speaking to al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik over his dinner, while we were between Makkah and Madīnah. He said to him: "O Commander of the Believers, Abān b. ʿUthmān married the daughter of ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUthmān in order to harm the daughter of ʿAbdullāh b. Jaʿfar, when she refused to sell him her inheritance from him during his illness, when paralysis struck him. Then he did not stop at that until he divorced Umm Kulthūm, so she became lawful for remarriage during his illness. And here is al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd, the nephew of Namir, who is alive and bears witness to the ruling of ʿUthmān ؓ regarding Tumāḍir bint al-Aṣbagh, whom he made an heir of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf ؓ after she had become lawful for remarriage, and he bears witness to the ruling of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ regarding Umm Ḥakīm bint Qāriẓ, whom he made an heir of ʿAbdullāh b. Mukmil after she had become lawful for remarriage. So call him and ask him about his testimony." When he finished speaking, al-Walīd said: "I do not think that ʿUthmān ؓ ruled so." Muʿāwiyah said: "If al-Sāʾib does not testify to that, then I am in the wrong; he was present and saw it."
