A man came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) and said: "He said to his wife: 'Your rope is on your shoulders.'" ʿUmar (may God be pleased with him) said to him: "Meet us at the pilgrimage season." So the man came to him in the Sacred Mosque and told him the story. He said: "Do you see that bald man circling the House? Go to him and ask him, then return and tell me what he answers you." He said: So he went to him, and it was ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him). He said: "Who sent you to me?" He said: "The Commander of the Believers." He said: "He said to his wife: 'Your rope is on your shoulders.'" ʿAlī said: "Face the House and swear by God that you did not intend divorce." The man said: "But I swear by God that I intended nothing but divorce." He said: "Your wife is irrevocably separated from you."
