"Among jealousy (ghayrah) there is that which God loves and that which God hates. The jealousy that God loves is jealousy where there is grounds for suspicion, and the jealousy that God hates is jealousy where there is no grounds for suspicion. And among pride (khuyalā') there is that which God loves: a man's pride in himself during fighting and during giving charity; and the pride that God hates is pride in falsehood."

machine translationYaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr narrates it, and there is disagreement about it. Ibn Abī ʿAdī and Ibn ʿUlayyah narrated from Ḥajjāj al-Ṣawwāf, from Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr, from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm, from Ibn Jābir b. ʿAtīk, from his father. Likewise said Abū al-Mughīrah and al-Firyābī from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā; and likewise said Abān al-ʿAṭṭār from Yaḥyā. Muḥammad b. Bashīr narrated it from Ḥajjāj al-Ṣawwāf, from Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr, from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm, from Ibn ʿAtīk, from his father, and he did not say "Ibn Jābir". Likewise said Ḥarb b. Shaddād from Yaḥyā; likewise said Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī from al-Firyābī, from al-Awzāʿī; and likewise said Ibn al-Mubārak from al-Awzāʿī as well, except that Ibn al-Mubārak transmitted it as a mursal report and did not say in it "from his father". The saying of those who said "Ibn Jābir b. ʿAtīk" is closer to the correct view.
