When it was the day of the Conquest, that is, the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted the people safety, except for four men and two women, among them ʿAbdullāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ. Then he mentioned the hadith up to where he said: As for ʿAbdullāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ, he hid with ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the people to the pledge of allegiance, he (ʿUthmān) brought him and made him stand before the Prophet ﷺ, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, accept the pledge of ʿAbdullāh." He raised his head and looked at him three times, each time refusing, then after three times he accepted his pledge. Then he turned to his Companions and said: "Was there not among you a right-minded man who would get up to this one when he saw me withhold my hand from his pledge, and kill him?" They said: "We did not know, O Messenger of Allah, what was in your heart. Why did you not signal to us with your eye?" He said: "It is not fitting for a Prophet to have a treacherous eye."
