The messenger of ʿUmar (may God be pleased with him) came to me, so I went to him. He said: "There have come to Medina some households from your people, and we have ordered a small gift for them, so take it and distribute it." I said: "O Commander of the Believers, order someone other than me to do it." He said: "Take it, man." He said: While I was in that situation, his freedman Yarfa' came in to him and said: "Here are ʿUthmān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, al-Zubayr and Saʿd" (and I do not know whether he mentioned Ṭalḥah or not) "asking permission to see you." He said: "Let them in." Then he waited a while and said: "Here are al-ʿAbbās and ʿAlī (may God be pleased with them) asking permission to see you." He said: So he permitted them and they entered. Al-ʿAbbās said: "O Commander of the Believers, judge between me and this man." The people said: "Judge between them, and relieve each of them of the other, for their dispute has gone on long." He said: At that time they were disputing over what God had granted to His Messenger of the property of Banū al-Naḍīr. The people said: "Yes, judge between them and relieve each of them of the other." ʿUmar (may God be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by God, by whose permission the heavens and the earth stand, do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'We are not inherited from; what we leave is charity'?" The people said: "Yes, he said that." Then he turned to the two of them, and they said the same. ʿUmar (may God be pleased with him) said: "I will inform you about this property. God Almighty singled out His Prophet ﷺ with something He gave to no one else." He said: {وَمَا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ مِنْهُمْ} the verse. He said: "By God, the Messenger of God ﷺ did not take it to the exclusion of you, nor did he prefer himself over you. He distributed it among you and spread it among you, until this property remained. He used to spend from it on his family for their year," and Maʿmar sometimes said: "he would set aside the sustenance of his family from it for a year, then put what remained of it where the property of God Almighty is put. When the Messenger of God ﷺ died, Abū Bakr said: 'I am the guardian of the Messenger of God ﷺ; I will act regarding it as he used to act.'" Then he turned to ʿAlī and al-ʿAbbās (may God be pleased with them) and said: "You two claimed that he was unjust in it, yet God knows that he was truthful, righteous, and a follower of the truth in it. Then after Abū Bakr (may God be pleased with him) I took charge of it for two years of my rule, and I did regarding it what the Messenger of God ﷺ and Abū Bakr did. You two claim that I am unjust in it, yet God knows that I am truthful, righteous, and a follower of the truth in it. Then you two came to me; this one, meaning al-ʿAbbās (may God be pleased with him), came to me asking for his inheritance from his brother's son, and this one, meaning ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him), came to me asking for his wife's inheritance from her father. I said to you: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'We are not inherited from; what we leave is charity.' Then it seemed right to me to hand it over to you, so I took from you the covenant of God and His pledge that you would act regarding it as the Messenger of God ﷺ acted, and Abū Bakr after him, and as I did during the days I took charge of it. You said: 'Hand it over to us on that basis.' Do you now want from me a judgment other than this? By the One by whose permission the heavens and the earth stand, I will not judge between you in it with any judgment other than this. If you two are unable to manage it, then give it back to me." He said: ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him) prevailed over him regarding it, so it was in the hand of ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him), then in the hand of Ḥasan, then in the hand of Ḥusayn, then in the hand of ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, then in the hand of Ḥasan b. Ḥasan, then in the hand of Zayd b. Ḥasan. Maʿmar said: Then it was in the hand of ʿAbdullāh b. Ḥasan, until he took charge, meaning the Banū al-ʿAbbās, and they seized it.
