That he found an abandoned infant in the time of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him), so he brought him to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him). He said: "What made you take this soul?" He said: "I found him lost, so I took him." Then his ʿarīf said to him: "O Commander of the Believers, he is a righteous man." He said: "Is that so?" He said: "Yes." ʿUmar said: "Go, he is free, and you have his walāʾ, and his maintenance is upon us."

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrated it, and there is disagreement about it from him. Muḥammad b. Bishr and Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth narrated it from ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, from Abū Jamīlah. Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāt said the same from al-Zuhrī. The correct version is what Mālik b. Anas and others narrated from al-Zuhrī: "I heard Sunayn Abū Jamīlah narrating to Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib."
