That ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib entered upon Fāṭimah while Ḥasan and Ḥusayn - peace be upon them - were crying. He said: "What makes them cry?" She said: "Hunger." So ʿAlī ؓ went out and found a dinar in the market. He came to Fāṭimah - peace be upon her - and told her. She said: "Go to so-and-so the Jew and get us some flour." He came to the Jew and bought flour with it. The Jew said: "Are you the son-in-law of this man who claims that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then take your dinar, and the flour is yours." So ʿAlī ؓ went out until he came with it to Fāṭimah - peace be upon her - and told her. She said: "Go to so-and-so the butcher and get us meat for a dirham." So he went and pawned the dinar for a dirham's worth of meat, and brought it. She kneaded, set up the oven, and baked, and she sent for her father, and he came to them. ʿAlī said: "O Messenger of Allah, let me tell you about it; if you see it as lawful for us, we will eat it and you will eat, and its matter is such and such." He said: "Eat in the name of Allah." So they ate. While they were in their place, a boy was appealing in the name of Allah and Islam for the dinar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that he be called, and he asked him. He said: "It fell from me in the market." The Prophet ﷺ said: "O ʿAlī, go to the butcher and say to him: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ says to you: Send me the dinar, and your dirham is owed by me." So he sent it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handed it over to him.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationAl-Bayhaqī declared these narrations defective (muʿallah) because of their inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) and because they contradict the hadiths that stipulate the Sunnah of publicly announcing a found item, since those are sounder.

  • ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Mudhirī
