There was a man among the people of Syria who was well-regarded. ʿUmar said to him: "Why do the people of Syria love you?" He said: "I fight alongside them and I console and support them." He said: So ʿUmar offered him ten thousand and said: "Take it, and use it to help you in your fighting." He said: "I have no need of it." ʿUmar said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered me wealth less than what I have offered you, and I said to him the same as what you have said to me. So he said to me: 'When Allah gives you wealth that you did not ask for and that your soul did not crave, accept it, for it is only provision that Allah has driven to you.'"
