The first thing for which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reproached Abū Lubābah b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir was that he disputed with an orphan of his over a date-palm cluster (ʿidhq) of a palm tree. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled in favour of Abū Lubābah regarding the cluster, so the orphan cried out and complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abū Lubābah: "Give me this cluster, O Abū Lubābah, so that we may return it to the orphan." But Abū Lubābah refused to give it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "O Abū Lubābah, give it to this orphan, and you will have the like of it in Paradise." But Abū Lubābah refused to give it. Then a man of the Anṣār said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think: if I buy this cluster and give it to the orphan, will I have the like of it in Paradise?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Yes." So the Anṣārī, who was Ibn al-Daḥdāḥah, went off until he met Abū Lubābah and said: "O Abū Lubābah, I will buy this cluster from you for my garden." He had a garden of date palms. Abū Lubābah said: "Yes." So he bought it from him for a garden. Ibn al-Daḥdāḥah did not wait long, only a short while, until the disbelievers of Quraysh came on the day of Uḥud. He went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and fought them, and he was killed as a martyr. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "How many a laden, low-hanging cluster belongs to Ibn al-Daḥdāḥah in Paradise!"
