ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was brought ṭilāʾ while he was at al-Jābiyah. It was being cooked at that time and was like thickened grape syrup (rubb). He said: "In this there is a drink that has not been fully reached. So the vinegar of wine that has been spoiled is not to be drunk until God makes its spoilage manifest; at that point the vinegar becomes good. And there is no harm for a man to buy vinegar that he finds with the People of the Book, as long as he does not know that they deliberately spoiled it after it had become wine."
