My father and I went out seeking knowledge in this quarter of the Anṣār before they passed away. The first person we met was Abū al-Yasar, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with him was a servant boy of his, carrying a bundle of pages. Abū al-Yasar wore a cloak (burdah) and a Maʿāfirī garment, and his servant wore a cloak and a Maʿāfirī garment. My father said to him: "Uncle, I see a mark of anger in your face." He said: "Yes. I was owed some money by so-and-so son of so-and-so al-Ḥarāmī. I went to his family and greeted them with salām, and said: 'Is he there?' They said: 'No.' Then a small son of his came out to me, and I said: 'Where is your father?' He said: 'He heard your voice and went into my mother's canopied couch.' So I said: 'Come out to me, for I know where you are.' He came out, and I said: 'What made you hide from me?' He said: 'By Allah, I will tell you, and I will not lie to you. By Allah, I feared that I would speak to you and lie to you, or promise you and break my promise, and you were a Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and by Allah, I was in hardship!' I said: 'By Allah?' He said: 'By Allah.' I said: 'By Allah?' He said: 'By Allah!' I said: 'By Allah?' He said: 'By Allah.' Then he brought his record, and erased it with his own hand and said: 'If you find the means to repay, repay me; otherwise you are free of the debt.' I bear witness with the sight of these two eyes of mine" and he placed his two fingers on his eyes, "and the hearing of these two ears of mine, and my heart here retained it" and he pointed to the vessel of his heart, "that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'Whoever gives respite to one in hardship, or remits something for him, Allah will shade him in His shade.'"
