A man from the people of al-Shām asked me about meat that had been hunted for others: may he eat it while he is in iḥrām? I gave him a ruling that he may eat it. Then I came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) and mentioned that to him. He said: "What ruling did you give?" I said: "I told him to eat it." He said: "Had you given him any ruling other than that, I would have struck your head with the whip." He said: Then ʿUmar (may God be pleased with him) said: "You were only forbidden to hunt it."
