حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ مَرْثَدٍ عَنْ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ

أَرْبَعٌ فِي أُمَّتِي مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لَنْ يَدَعُوهُنَّ: التَّطَاعُنُ فِي الْأَنْسَابِ، وَالنِّيَاحَةُ، وَمُطِرْنَا بِنَوْءِ كَذَا وَكَذَا، وَالْعَدْوَى الرَّجُلُ يَشْتَرِي الْبَعِيرَ الْأَجْرَبَ فَيَجْعَلُهُ فِي مِائَةِ بَعِيرٍ فَتَجْرَبُ فَمَنْ أَعْدَى الْأَوَّلَ.

✧ Four traits in my community are from the affairs of the pre-Islamic era, and they will not abandon them: boasting about lineages, wailing over the dead, saying 'We have been given rain by such-and-such a star,' and contagion — a man buys a mangy camel and puts it among a hundred camels, and they become mangy; so who infected the first one?
