✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of Khaybar: 'I will surely give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will grant victory through him.' Umar said: 'I never desired leadership before that day, but I stretched myself out and hoped that it would be given to me.' The next day, he called Ali ﷺ and gave it to him, saying: 'Fight and do not turn back until victory is granted to you.' He advanced a short distance and then called out: 'O Messenger of Allah, on what basis shall I fight?' He said: 'Fight until they bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. If they do that, they have protected their blood and wealth from me, except for what is due, and their reckoning is with Allah, Mighty and Majestic.'
