✧ Umar b. al-Khattab stood on the pulpit on Friday. He praised and extolled Allah, then mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr. Then he said, 'I saw a vision that I think portends my death. I saw as if a rooster pecked me twice.' He said: It was described to me as a red rooster. I told it to Asma' bt. Umays, the wife of Abu Bakr, and she said, 'A non-Arab man will kill you.' He said: The people are telling me to appoint a successor, but Allah would not let His religion and the caliphate with which He sent His Prophet ﷺ be lost. If something happens to me soon, the consultation is among these six with whom the Prophet of Allah ﷺ died pleased. Whoever of them you pledge allegiance to, hear and obey him. I know that some people will criticize this matter. I fought them with this hand of mine for Islam—those are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. By Allah, I will not leave anything in what my Lord entrusted to me and made me responsible for that is more important to me than al-kalalah. By Allah, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ never spoke harshly to me about anything since I accompanied him as harshly as he spoke to me about al-kalalah, until he poked his finger in my chest and said, 'The verse of summer that was revealed at the end of Surat al-Nisa' suffices you.' If I live, I will issue a ruling on it that both the literate and the illiterate will know. I call Allah as witness over the governors of the cities that I sent them only to teach people their religion and clarify to them the Sunnah of their Prophet ﷺ, and to bring to me what is unclear to them. Then, O people, you eat from two plants that I think are foul: this garlic and onion. By Allah, I used to see the Prophet of Allah ﷺ smell their odor on a man and order him to be taken by the hand and led out of the mosque until he was brought to al-Baqi'. So whoever must eat them should kill their odor by cooking.' He said: He delivered the sermon to the people on Friday and was struck on Wednesday.
